Mattis warns North Korea to stand down or face 'end of regime'”

Secretary of State told reporters on Wednesday that Trump was seeking to send a "strong message" to North Korea that the United States was prepared to defend itself and its allies.

"They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen", Trump said.

Pyongyang's state-run KCNA news agency issued an update on its strike plans after Trump's incendiary comments on Tuesday that threats to the United States from Pyongyang would be met with "fire and fury".

But the president has since boasted on Twitter about the U.S. nuclear arsenal. "It is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before", Trump said on Twitter. In addition to that, a direct conflict may lead to Russian Federation and China joining the North Korean side, resulting in a global conflict in the region.

The Trump administration, for its part, has led with a very heavy hand in the Korean crisis. "I think the president just wanted to be clear to the North Korean regime that the US has the unquestionable ability to defend itself, will defend itself and its allies, and I think it was important that he deliver that message to avoid any miscalculation on their part".

A spokesman for the Korean People's Army said the plan would be "put into practice in a multi-current and consecutive way any moment" once Kim Jong Un makes a decision.

"North Korea had best not make any more threats to the United States".

The comments came in a statement released by the Department of Defense.

But in a message to the public, the governor of Guam, Eddie Baza Calvo, said there was now "no threat" to the island and the Marianas archipelago, but that Guam was "prepared for any eventuality".

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said that Trump's warning was "a strong message to North Korea in language that Kim Jong-un would understand, because he doesn't seem to understand diplomatic language". It would have been telling to see the effect those words had on his advisers.

Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, left, walks with Dana White, the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs, before speaking at the Defense Innovation Unit Experimental in Mountain View, Calif., Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017.

A day later and thousands of miles away, Rex Tillerson had out his mop and broom. The newspaper said USA intelligence officials have assessed that a decade after North Korea's first nuclear test explosion, Pyongyang has produced nuclear weapons for ballistic missile delivery, including by intercontinental missiles - the type capable of reaching the continental U.S.

It could simply be unfortunate phrasing from a man who is sometimes loose with words. And he insists his administration has "done a lot of modernization" and "a lot of renovation" already.

The Washington Post first reported the news, citing a July 28 report by the Defense Intelligence Agency about North Korea's capability of placing a nuclear warhead atop an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Tension in the region has risen since North Korea carried out two nuclear bomb tests a year ago and two intercontinental ballistic missile tests in July.

Kim Ki Nam, member of the Political Bureau and vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, told the crowd that "the USA and its allies have fabricated a sanctions resolution again, taking over the United Nations while picking on our ICBM test launch".

The South Carolina lawmaker - a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee - tells CBS' "This Morning" that war would be "horrific" and he believes "we're headed that way unless the world can stop North Korea".
