Pampanga under state of calamity due to bird flu outbreak”

The Philippines on August 11 reported the first avian flu outbreak at a poultry farm in Pampanga province in Luzon island.

Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Pinol said at least 38,000 chickens have died of the avian influenza Type A Subtype H5 in San Luis town in Pampanga, north of Manila.

"We will cull all 400,000 birds within a 1-km (0.6 mile) area".

"We have declared seven-kilometer radius danger zone with regard to the outbreak but for immediate quarantine, all birds within one-kilometer radius will be destroyed".

The source of the disease and the strain of avian flu were not immediately clear. Six farms in Barangays San Carlos and Santa Rita in San Luis, Pampanga were affected by the outbreak, Piñol said.

Close to 40,000 poultry heads, including quail and ducks, have already been slaughtered in the farming village where the highly infectious strain of bird flu was detected. "BAI (Bureau of Animal Industry) will first focus on the area of the outbreak", Piñol said. On the other hand, the number of free-range birds that would be killed could reach a million, Piñol said.
