Republican Support For Congress Is The Lowest It's Been All Year

Republican Support For Congress Is The Lowest It's Been All Year”

New polling indicates that the majority of Americans believe Congress has been a failure since GOP lawmakers gained full control in 2015.

The approval rating for Republican leaders in both chambers of Congress dropped sharply from about 39 percent in January to around 24 percent in August. Twenty-four percent of respondents approved of GOP leaders in Congress while 71 percent disapproved.

Republican approval of Congress was at a high of 50 percent after President Trump's inauguration in February but gradually fell in the months following.

On Aug. 10, a CNN/SSRS survey found that only 20 percent of national adults were satisfied with the overall job performance of Congress while 75 percent disapproved, CNN reports.

Inter-party differences sank the several Republican-only plans to repeal and replace Obamacare this year. Only 8% point the blame at President Trump. And 21 percent of respondents wanted the GOP majority to continue their efforts to repeal the health care law while 21 percent wanted them to just move on to other issues.

Interestingly, 58% of respondents to the poll said that the government should provide a national health insurance programme for all Americans, even if it required higher taxes to do so. That's down slightly from ten years ago, before the passage of the ACA, when 64% supported the idea.

A quarter of Americans, a plurality, (24%) say health care is the most important issue facing the country today.

"Democrats have given Congress fairly low ratings throughout 2017, ranging from 10% to 19%", the pollster noted.

This trend points to a broader problem for Democrats: their lack of a credible, unifying, positive message. Democrats have been optimistic that Trump's unpopularity might spark a wave election in 2018, but the electoral map is unfriendly so far and Republicans have held seats in tight special elections. Still, midterm electorates typically lean more Republican than all Americans.

The poll was "based on telephone interviews conducted August 2-6, 2017, with a random sample of 1,017 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 US states and the District of Columbia".
