Sunderland House Explosion On Rosslyn Avenue Sounded Like A 'Bomb'”

There has been an explosion at a house in Sunderland. "For your safety, we ask that people do not attend the scene", a police statement on Facebook read.

Northumbria Police are asking people to stay away from the scene.

The explosion is said to have occurred at a private address.

Officers have also attempted to re-assure the public by saying "There is nothing to indicate at this time that this incident is linked to terrorism".

The Tyne and Wear Fire & Rescue Service has five appliances, 26 firefighters and several specialist units in attendance. "Further updates to follow".

North East Ambulance Service are also now attending the scene.

The explosion happened in the Ryhope area of the city and witnesses said a house had been destroyed.

While David Allan said: "Major incident unfolding in Ryhope - suspected gas explosion!"

One shop worker told Chronicle Live she heard "the loudest bang I have ever heard in my life". "Roslyn avenue. House totally collapsed".

It's reported that there are around 15 emergency vehicles on the scene.
