TalkTalk handed £100000 fine over customer data breach

TalkTalk handed £100000 fine over customer data breach”

TalkTalk Telecom Group has been fined GBP 100,000 by the UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) for failing to look after customer data and risking it falling into the hands of fraudsters and scammers.

In autumn 2014 Talktalk notified the authorities that it was investigating a suspected breach....

In some cases, the calls followed a genuine engineering visit, and the scammers were able to give customer addresses and account numbers, helping to give legitimacy to their claim.

"Is it really surprising that companies such as TalkTalk continue to suffer these data breaches when they stand to face such an insignificant fine, nearly 3 years after the incident?" he noted.

The main TalkTalk hack all seems like ages ago, and we thought that all the major fines have been laid down by now.

According to the ICO, TalkTalk should have been aware of the risks and that the misuse of personal data had the potential to cause substantial damage or distress, and should have taken measures to protect against potential scams and frauds.

"Yes hacking is wrong, but that is not an excuse for companies to abdicate their security obligations".

The customers, who were told TalkTalk needed to conduct tests or fix a fault remotely, were then requested to download software that would give the criminals remote access to the computers. That was in late 2016, TalkTalk accepted the lot and the fine, and hopefully the advice. In October, TalkTalk found that three Wipro user accounts has been used to gain "unauthorized and illegal access" to personal data of up to 21,000 customers.

An investigation by the ICO found that TalkTalk breached the Data Protection Act because "it allowed staff to have access to large quantities of customers' data".

The ICO found this level of access was unjustifiably wide-ranging and put the data at risk.

"TalkTalk may consider themselves to be the victims here". But the real victims are the 21,000 people whose information was open to abuse by the malicious actions of a small number of people.

She continued: "TalkTalk should have known better and they should have put their customers first".

Forty Wipro employees had access to data of between 25,000 and 50,000 TalkTalk customers.

The Register has asked Wipro for a comment.

"We informed our customers at the time and launched a thorough investigation, which has led to us withdrawing all customer service operations from India".
