Trump says he's 'doing the military a favor' with transgender soldier ban

Trump says he's 'doing the military a favor' with transgender soldier ban”

President Donald Trump announced on Twitter last month that he would ban transgender people from serving in the military "in any capacity", reviving a ban that had ended in 2016.

The report believes you would need to spend almost a billion to replace all trans people now in the military, estimating a cost of $75,000 to recruit and trans someone.

Trump, speaking to reporters at his New Jersey country club, said the issue of transgender service members had been "complicated" and "confusing" for the military.

"Look, I have great respect for the (transgender) community", Trump said. Instead, he claimed without evidence that he "got a lot of votes" from "that community". It's been a very hard situation and I think I'm doing a lot of people a favor by coming out and just saying it.

The president did not elaborate on exactly what "it" was.

On Wednesday, five transgender members of the US military, including Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans, sued Trump over the transgender ban, saying he made the announcement without consulting senior military commanders.

But the USA military is not a golf course, and the highly-trained and highly-skilled service members he wants to fire because they are transgender will need to be replaced.

Meanwhile, GLAD and the National Center for Lesbian Rights filed a lawsuit seeking an injunction against Trump's directive to reinstate a ban. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of five transgender women who are serving openly, says a ban would violate the women's constitutional rights.

Defense officials said Trump's announcement two weeks ago took them by surprise. Mattis has not yet spoken publicly about the issue.
