WWE Network to Launch in China

The pro wrestling company will enter the ring in China on August 18 through a revenue-sharing deal with homegrown video streaming site PPTV, which is controlled by retail giant Suning Commerce, the Wall Street Journal reports.

"PPTV is a tremendous partner and has been key in helping us engage with WWE fans in China and further establishing our brand in this important market", said Michelle Wilson, WWE Chief Revenue & Marketing Officer.

Chinese streaming service PPTV will host the WWE Network with subscribers required to download the PPTV app in order to access the content on their mobile phone, tablet, smart TVs or set-top boxes. The launch date comes a few days before Summerslam 2017 which will be broadcast live with Mandarin commentary on August 21, 7 a.m. Beijing time.

This is WWE's latest attempt at making inroads into the Chinese market.

In 2016, Suning and WWE signed a deal to show the weekly Raw and Smackdown programs live on PPTV with Mandarin commentary and in April, PPTV made offered Westlemania 33 as a pay-per-view event, the first time the WWE's biggest event was broadcast live in China. The release notes that Chinese viewers will have access to the same live events, original series, and archived footage as all other customers, with WWE promising to add over 1,000 hours of new content over the next 12 months.
