At least 36 people were killed and 12 others missing in floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in several districts across Nepal, officials said today.

Landslides and floods are common in Nepal during the monsoon season and the rest of the region. Nepal Police said 32 persons have been killed in the past month due to flood and landslides.

Rescue teams of soldiers, police and local people have been deployed to help those trapped on rooftops or on higher ground, officials added, as TV pictures showed damaged roads and bridges.

A statement released on Saturday said six persons were killed in Sunsari, four each in Kalikot, Rasuwa, Sindhuli and Chitwan, three in Panchthar, three in Banke, two in Baglung and one each in Jhapa and Makwanpur districts.

Nepal's Meteorology Department said precipitations reached 227 ml in some districts and announced that moderate to heavy rain was expected to continue in the centre of the country until Monday. The water level in the Saptakosi River has exceeded the danger mark. "But we are more focused on rescuing those who are alive than collecting details about the dead", he said, indicating the death toll could go up. So, in the Eastern city of Biratnagar runway of the airport is also covered with water, which led to the suspension of flights.
