Chelsea influence has been the game changer for Arsenal - Jamie Carragher

Chelsea influence has been the game changer for Arsenal - Jamie Carragher”

Jurgen Klopp's side drew 3-3 at Watford in their opening Premier League game of the season, with poor marking leading to Stefano Okaka's first, an inability to track runners contributing to Abdoulaye Doucoure's second and shambolic defending at a corner causing Miguel Britos's late equaliser.

The Reds' defending for both goals left a lot to be desired and even sparked an argument between former Liverpool players Jamie Redknapp and Jamie Carragher in the Sky Sports studio.

Redknapp suggested that Liverpool's defensive problems would be solved if they signed Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.

He may have expected Carragher to agree.

"The more we get used to Klopp he's not someone always going to look at the cheque book", the Reds legend said on Sky Sports.

'Nothing changes, again. That first half was like Liverpool at their worst last season so then you've had a pre-season and nothing's changing. What have they worked on? "What are they looking at?" One player's not going to change that'.

"He's done well pre-season".

"I think (Virgil) Van Dijk's agent has got another 20 grand a week on his contract", said Redknapp.

"I think they need a leader, though", the retired midfielder argued.

There was also discussion about how Leicester let their lead slip, which they held twice during the match, and the contribution of Jamie Vardy, who netted two of the Foxes' three goals on Friday evening.

"But I don't care how good a centre-back, getting exposed on counter-attacks, you've got to cover the full width of the pitch, it's nearly impossible". "Firmino can attack the ball!"

"They play so high and wide, if you're a centre-back you're exposed all the time, it's culture".

You can watch their argument here.

But Carragher continued to argue that the Reds' system would still undermine their defensive personnel.

"If you want to challenge for the Premier League, or win the Premier League, you've got to be conceding less than a goal a game: 30, 35 goals".
