European Union imposes tougher sanctions on N. Korea for missile tests”

Tensions between Pyongyang and Washington have been escalating due to North Korea's tests of nuclear and inter-continental ballistic missile.

"Following her talks in Manila, in the margins of the ASEAN Regional Forum... the High Representative and Vice President Federica Mogherini has made a decision to convene an extraordinary meeting of the Political and Security Committee on Monday 14 August to discuss possible next steps on the situation in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea", the statement said.

The EU extended sanctions against the DPRK, adding nine people and four companies, including the state foreign trade Bank of North Korea in the sanctions list.

On Aug. 5, the UNSC voted unanimously for fresh sanctions on North Korea following two tests of intercontinental ballistic missiles in July, prompting Pyongyang to warn of a "stern action of justice" against the United States and a missile strike around the U.S. territory of Guam.

North Korea in turn threatened to strike Guam, a Pacific-island US territory home to a strategic air force base and a population of 162,000.

On Tuesday, Trump issued a controversial warning to the DPRK, saying that threats from the country would be met with "fire and fury like the world has never seen".

Months later, on August 5, the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution banning North Korean exports of coal, iron, lead and seafood in an effort to curb the country's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.

North Koreans stage a rally in Pyongyang on Thursday.
