GOP Senators Tweet Trump in Support of McConnell

GOP Senators Tweet Trump in Support of McConnell”

"Republican senators who have been a thorn in President Trump's side are beginning to see the political consequences of opposing the White House as pro-Trump activists start to mobilize", says the story retweeted by the president.

"If there's blame to go around, people from the states, the senators that promised to vote for it then didn't, that's who I think there needs to be a discussion with", Paul said after a Lexington event to discuss his proposal to create health care associations.

The president has been smarting from the Senate's failure to pass an overhaul of the Affordable Care Act, a long-standing priority for the GOP and a marquee campaign promise from Trump past year.

Similarly, six in 10 (60%) say that insurers' decisions not to sell insurance plans in certain marketplaces will affect everyone with insurance, and three-quarters (76%) say so about insurers charging higher premiums in certain marketplaces.

Ominously for the GOP, 6 in 10 say Trump and congressional Republicans are responsible for any upcoming health care problems since they control government.

And by almost 2-to-1, most say it's good that the Senate rejected the GOP repeal-and-replace bill last month.

The affirmative vote looms large for 21 GOP lawmakers, including Young, who represent competitive congressional districts where Democrat Hillary Clinton won or came close in last year's presidential election. The failure has led to huge infighting within the GOP: Trump wants another vote, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wants to move on, and Speaker Paul Ryan is eager to work on tax cuts for the rich. With a 52-48 GOP majority and Vice President Mike Pence available to cast a tie-breaking vote, McConnell has said he's moving onto other matters unless "people can show me 50 votes for anything that would make progress". Fifty-two percent of Republicans said they want President Trump to make the ACA work.

And they want them to stop trying to scuttle it. While around 6 in 10 overall say Trump should not use such disruptive tactics, a majority of Republicans back that approach.

Asked later Thursday about McConnell, Trump suggested that if the Kentucky Republican can't get health care reform, tax reform and infrastructure spending done, he should consider stepping aside. There has been a 9-percentage-point increase in people who hold a favorable view since November.

The poll was "based on telephone interviews conducted august 2-6, 2017, with a random sample of 1,017 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 US states and the District of Columbia".
