Grieving family shocked to see decaying foot on top of grandfather's casket

Grieving family shocked to see decaying foot on top of grandfather's casket”

As the body of 85-year-old Cleveland Butler was being lowered into the ground at Mount Holiness Memorial Park in New Jersey, his family noticed that a deceased person's foot had crossed over into the space reserved for Butler's casket.

The Butlers, naturally, had not expected to see any unfamiliar dead people at their beloved family member's funeral, and they were upset.

"This was a very traumatizing situation, first dealing with losing my father and then this", daughter Sandra Butler told the New York Daily News.

"I couldn't even look at it".

"We had pictures of the leg and they didn't like that", Sandra said, "We reached out to the New Jersey State Cemetery Board and a spokesman said the investigation was just beginning". 'It was like business as usual for them.

Cleveland Butler died after suffering a fatal stroke in his Brooklyn nursing home.

Butler's son and a daughter told the website that workers weren't fazed when a foot wrapped in plastic and covered in cloth popped through the dirt, resting against their father's casket.

One of the mourners snapped a cellphone photo of what looks like an outtake from "The Walking Dead".

They claim cemetery workers quickly shovelled dirt over the foot.

He said even if it's routine for caskets to disintegrate, exactly why did this happen?

He said "Is it newsworthy?" The Butlers noted that one of the gravediggers also dropped his cell phone and a pack of cigarettes into the grave.

Last month a grieving family in South Wales buried a total stranger after the wrong nameplate was put on a coffin.

The worker fished both out with a rake before relatives saw the foot in the grave.

But cemetery caretaker Bill Plog, who started at Mount Holiness in 1983, said he was surprised such incidents were so rare.

'We were shocked. All we could say was "Wow", because that was a human, someone else's loved one, ' he told the paper. He said the grave plot next to Butler's is from 1969.

"People are grieving", he explained. 'The last thing you want to do is get into an argument'.
