Half of Republicans would back postponing 2020 election if Trump proposed it

Half of Republicans would back postponing 2020 election if Trump proposed it”

The Democrats, who have said that Obamacare should stay in place, with some tweaks to the marketplace, have the public on their side.

About half of Republicans and supporters of President Trump say the Trump administration should do what they can to make the law work (52 percent and 51 percent, respectively) while about four in ten say they should do what they can to make the law fail (40 percent and 39 percent, respectively).

Since Congress began debating repeal and replace legislation, there has been news about instability in the ACA marketplaces.

Most (57%) say Republicans in Congress should work with Democrats to make improvements to the 2010 health law.

If Trump and congressional Republicans proposed postponing the election to ensure only eligible citizens could vote, support from Republicans rises to 56 percent.

With the Kaiser survey consistently showing clear overall public support for retaining Obama's law, the numbers help explain why some centrist Republicans who rely on moderate voters' support opposed repeal or backed it only after winning some concessions.

To push Democrats to work with Republicans on repeal and replace, President Trump has threatened to stop payments that compensate insurers for the Affordable Care Act's cost-sharing reductions, which reduce out-of-pocket costs for lower-income Americans buying insurance through ACA marketplaces. While around 6 in 10 overall say Trump should not use such disruptive tactics, a majority of Republicans back that approach.

For example, 6 in 10 Republicans and Trump backers want the GOP to continue its repeal and replace drive in Congress.

By almost 2-to-1, poll respondents said it's good that the repeal-and-replace bill failed, and about 4 in 5 respondents want the White House and Republicans to focus on making the ACA better, the Associated Press reported.

The poll also found that the majority of the public continues to view ObamaCare favorably.

Almost 80% of Americans say the Trump administration should do what they can to make Obamacare work.

And around two-thirds from those groups want Trump to stop enforcing the tax penalty Obama's law levies on people who don't buy coverage.

Even though only about 10 million people receive coverage through the marketplaces, most (60%) Americans believe that their family will be negatively affected by rising premiums in the marketplaces, twice the share (31%) who say it would have no impact.

The margin of sampling error including the design effect for the full sample is plus or minus 3 percentage points.
