HBO Hacker Leaks $250000 Offer Memo from Network

HBO Hacker Leaks $250000 Offer Memo from Network”

HBO has offered the hackers threatening to release Games of Thrones episodes and info $250K, and they're calling it a "bounty payment" as they scramble to get the situation under control.

Apparently the rogues refused to turn into sellswords, and leaked the text of the July 27 email to Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, who published it Thursday.

The unnamed HBO exec told hackers that the company has "been working hard since [July 23] to review all of the material that you have made available to us".

Variety, citing sources "close" to HBO, said the network was merely trying to buy time to figure out its next move, and it never had an intention of paying what the email termed as a "bounty".

Details of the HBO hack emerged last week and a script from the popular show was leaked online.

The email's publication suggests the hackers will only accept the $6 million ransom, banking on the belief that HBO always pays its debts. Leakers gonna leak. Just... please no Game of Thrones spoilers before Sunday night? HBO reportedly declined to comment on the matter to those outlets. So far, we have rarely heard of any big companies acquiescing to ransom demands or even negotiating with hackers at all.

Earlier this week, the HBO hackers released phone numbers and email addresses of Game of Thrones cast members, as part of a 3.4GB data dump.

Specifically, the hackers demanded "our six-month salary in bitcoin" and claimed they earned 12-15 million dollars a year (£9m-£11.5m) from blackmailing organisations whose networks they have penetrated.

They felt the offer of $250,000 was generous and enough to keep the hacker off their back and to stop any further leaks from happening. "We have weeks of negotiations with HBO officials, but they broke their promises and want to play with us".
