Health Department: Blue-green algae reported in Greenport pond”

The Oakland County Health Division has issued a public health advisory for Sugden Lake in White Lake Township and in Pontiac Lake in Waterford and White Lake Townships.

Alberta Health Services is warning that the toxic blooms have been identified in Pigeon Lake, 108 kilometres south of Edmonton. Seek medical attention if any of the following symptoms occur: nausea, vomiting or diarrhea; skin, eye or throat irritation or allergic reactions or breathing difficulties.

AHS advises lake users not to swim or wade in areas with the algae. Therefore, where blue-green algal blooms are present, avoid drinking the water or using it for other domestic purposes.

Alberta lakes may be experiencing more algal blooms because of development in local watersheds, but there has also been an increase in water monitoring. Fish fillets, however, are safe for human consumption.

"We are thrilled to reopen the lakes even though it is not as soon as we would have liked", said David Mason, a park district spokesman.

AHS said blue-green algae had been detected in the water on Pigeon Lake.

Blue-green algae occurs naturally, and is often visible when weather conditions are calm - it looks like scum, grass clippings, fuzz or globs on the surface of the water.
