Kerala school's uniform plan for bright, boring students sparks row”

A school in Kerala's Malappuram district has landed in controversy after it introduce two different uniforms for students based on their academic skills, Hindustan Times reported.

According to the freakish uniform code, academically sharp students will wear white shirts and tops while the second category of average and under-performing students will wear red check shirts and tops. Around 900 students are at present studying in Al Farooque English medium school and the mental health of these young minds can not be ignored like this.

A section of them approached the district childline authorities with written complaints following which a team visited the school which is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education. Following intervention by district childline authorities after some parents and students complained to them, the school has withdrawn the move, authorities said. All the students were advised to follow the same in the new academic session which started back in June. According to the organization, this new unique system will help students improve their performance and hence will secure higher grades in examinations through out the year. "And we demanded an appropriate action from the school". When their protests fell on deaf ears they approached the Childline (a body working under the state social welfare ministry to ensure rights of children) officials who found the system highly discriminatory.

The school authorities were not immediately available for comment. Explaing how students felt discriminated with the new system, Child Line counsellor Mohammed Rashid said, "We found most students were unhappy with the new system". Meanwhile, school principal Abdul Kareem said the new system was launched as part of forming a prefect group to monitor cyber crimes and other discipline breaches.
