Mattis: North Korea diplomacy working despite Trump threats”

"How often do you see France and China, Russia, the United States, and I could go on".

A number of USA allies, including Australia and Japan, have said that they're prepared to stand with Trump and will take military action against North Korea if Jong Un launches an attack against Guam, according to Fox News.

Mattis's comments came shortly after President Donald Trump warned North Korea it should be "very, very nervous" if it thinks of attacking America, and doubled down on a vow to rain "fire and fury" on Pyongyang if it continued to threaten the US.

He said that the U.S.is dealing with the North Korean threat with an effective diplomatic effort.

Mattis praised the efforts of United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley that resulted in a U.N. Security Council resolution condemning North Korea's actions.

Mattis said the tragedy of war is well-known and "it doesn't need another characterization beyond the fact that it would be catastrophic".

Trump earlier showed no contrition about his remark on Wednesday that aggression by North Korea would be met with "fire and fury like the world has never seen".

Meanwhile North Korea's state-run KCNA news agency said its army would complete plans in mid-August to fire four intermediate-range missiles over Japan to land near Guam.

The war of words between North Korea and the USA heated up after the Washington Post published a story that said North Korea can now miniaturize a warhead on top of a missile - a capability that brings the regime a step closer to producing a nuclear weapon that can hit the U.S. That's the preferred way to deal with it, ' Turnbull said in a radio interview.

'The current situation on the Korean Peninsula is highly complicated and sensitive.

The issue came to the fore again this week when US intelligence analysts assessed that North Korea had produced a miniaturized nuclear warhead, according to multiple sources, which would bring the country a significant step closer to being able to fire a nuclear-tipped warhead at the USA or its allies. Trump added that "maybe the statement wasn't tough enough" and that North Korea can expect a reaction "of the likes of which nobody has seen before" if Kim strikes Guam.

The Northern Viper drills are one of the scheduled exercises that Japan's Self Defence Forces conducts regularly with their USA counterparts and are not a response to the latest tensions.

The two discussed responses to North Korean provocations and the security situation on the Korean peninsula, he said. Moon is likely to highlight his policy on North Korea on the holiday, the only one the two Koreas share. We are united in calling on the North Korean regime to halt its nuclear program.
