Memorial held for US police shooting victim Justine Damond in Minneapolis

Memorial held for US police shooting victim Justine Damond in Minneapolis”

A community is gathering Friday night to remember a woman shot and killed by Minneapolis police last month.

Noor's partner, Officer Matthew Harrity, told investigators a noise startled him just before Damond approached their police SUV.

Justine Damond, 40, was shot in the stomach by Officer Mohamed Noor on July 15 after she called 911 to report a possible sexual assault near her home.

Officer Matthew Harrity told investigators that he drove to the scene and was startled by a "loud sound" near the squad auto, according to Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Ruszczyk's fiance, Don Damond, was expected to speak; the two were planning to marry this month.

The search warrant application was filed Thursday by an agent with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

Lawyers for the killer police officer, Noor, 36, claim he felt he was being ambushed when he pulled the trigger and shot Ms Damond.

People attending are encouraged to wear blue, one of Justine's favorite colors. Plans called for luminarias and a silent walk around the lake at the end of the memorial. Noor has declined to be interviewed by investigators and can not be compelled to do so. Investigators can not compel him to give an interview.

Ms Damond's father John Ruszczyk and other Australian family members are reported to have flown to Minneapolis for the memorial at the Lake Harriet Bandshell.

There will be prayers, a Native American sage burning, music and poetry as her friends and family honour the yoga teacher and spiritual healer.

Her friends have said the concern Ruszczyk showed that night for a possible assault victim was characteristic of her caring nature.

The memorial will show the video of Justine helping ducklings stuck in a drain near her house in Minneapolis - retrieving them barefoot.

"Her message is of love and peace and nonviolence".

The two officers had not activated their body cameras.

Ruszczyk's death has caused outrage in the United States and Australia and led to the resignation of the city's police chief.
