NASA to study Earth's ionosphere during total solar eclipse

NASA to study Earth's ionosphere during total solar eclipseā€¯

"I'm not really sure if we have a forecast model or if we'll have to make manual adjustments", said Mike Bardou, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

The path of totality for the August 21 eclipse will reach a maximum width of 71 miles and stretch in a southeasterly route from the Pacific Northwest to the middle of the Atlantic coastal plain, passing over 14 states, including Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina.

For the first time in almost four decades, the United States will be affected by a total solar eclipse on August 21.

The total solar eclipse path cuts across northeast Kansas, including Wyandotte County.

That eclipse didn't do much other than distract from the deluge of political news, according to "American Eclipse", but there's good reason to believe that this one could be different.

Now, it still being more than a week out from the Total Solar Eclipse, if we try to pinpoint any specific locations in a forecast, we're going to run into trouble.

Q: What makes the trip worth it to you? Smaller towns may have longer periods of totality, but many of them do not have adequate hotel space for travelers who want to see it. "Normally if you look directly at the sun, the natural response is to squint, shield your eyes, blink or turn away". That central shadow creating that thin path is known as the path of totality. The most impressive part is the final minute: As the sun transitions from 99 percent to total coverage, the sky abruptly gets about 10,000 times darker. The diamond ring has disappeared and the moon has completely covered the sun. The corona is the same brightness as the full moon and is equally safe to look at with the naked eye.

Planets: In order of brightness, Venus, Jupiter, Mars and Mercury will be visible. The horizon glows red from the light outside the moon's shadow. Thus, the eclipse's southern border could be pinpointed to within 225 feet (69 m) - the distance between 230 Riverside Drive and 240 Riverside Drive, on New York City's Upper West Side. If the sky is clear, you are guaranteed to find it worthwhile. But still people can experience the eclipse and view it if they take the proper precautions - that's important because there's a real risk to your eyes if you look directly at the sun even though it seems eclipsed, even though it seems OK.

These glasses have special-purpose solar filters, like Mylar, and wearing them may mean a million-fold decrease in the amount of light getting into the eye, Van Gelder said.

We hope to learn more about how the sun shines.

"We've very accurately timed the moon's passage, but each time there's an eclipse, we can time its orbit a little better", Ciupik said.

The total solar eclipse will have some imperceptible effects, such as the sudden loss of extreme ultraviolet radiation from the Sun, which generates the ionized layer of Earth's atmosphere, called the ionosphere.
