Protect your eyes from damage when viewing the solar eclipseā€¯

Zoos and scientists across the country are expected to note their observations on changes in animal behavior during the eclipse just as scientist have done for centuries.

"We'll have several telescopes looking safely at the sun, we've got some eclipse glasses and viewers, also safe", said Terry Bridges, a physics and astronomy instructor at Okanagan College and member of the Society. CSUF physicists Jocelyn Read and Joshua Smith also will be at the campus event to answer questions.

The 2045 eclipse will travel northwest through the state, including over Arches National Park. Expect Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Flickr and Instagram to be swamped with eclipse pictures during and after the event.

Why all the intrigue surrounding this cosmic event?

"In our lifetime, this is the best eclipse to see", said Greg Earle, an electrical and computer engineer at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg who is leading another of the studies.

To test your viewer, take it outside on a sunny day and hold the shoe box so that it lines up with its own shadow, aligning with light from the sun.

The Moon's formation 4.5 billion years ago, it would've been 23,000 km from earth, so eclipses would have been a more regular occurrence.

Retired physicist and Founders Hall member Vernon Beck will project onto a screen a view of the moon's passage between the earth and the sun.

The eclipse's path of totality, a 70-mile-wide band on the ground where the sun is seen as totally blocked by the moon, cuts across much of the middle of the state on a centerline that leads from St. Joseph to Columbia and through Cape Girardeau.

Hart said a total eclipse is "The rarest astronomical event, in any location, that you will ever experience in your life". As a solar physicist who can only usually observe the solar corona from space by satellite instrumentation, it is special to be able to glimpse the corona with the (protected) naked eye for a brief time.

What will we see here in Orange County?

At this time, the Earth casts a shadow on the lunar surface.

Getting the chance to watch a solar eclipse is incredible but could also do serious damage to a person's eyes when he or she is not using the proper equipment.

You could buy a pair with estimated delivery before August 21 from Amazon, but third-party sellers are jacking up the price as stock runs low, charging $24.95 or more for a five-pack instead of $14.95.

Viewing the full total eclipse is offered inside the dome theater from a NASA feed. A total lunar eclipse can make the moon appear red or orange because the only light reaching it is coming from the edges of the earth (sunrises and sunsets).
