Red Sox place Dustin Pedroia on the 10-day disabled list

Red Sox place Dustin Pedroia on the 10-day disabled list”

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroai is back on the disabled list due to a nagging injury in his left knee.

The move was made retroactive to Wednesday.

After starting at DH for one game, Pedroia's knee issues cropped back up and he has not played since.

Pedroia (knee) said he hopes to return this season, but there is no timetable for his return, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.

Then Pedroia sat out Friday night's game in the Bronx, which raised some eyebrows about his availability. How long he'll be sidelined this time remains to be seen, although I would expect it will be more than the minimum 10 days. He served as designated hitter that night in Tampa, going 1-for-4, but didn't return to the lineup the next day.

Pedroia went on the DL on August 1 but returned to the Red Sox on Tuesday.

Pedroia had cartilage surgery on his knee last October 12. In the near term, the Red Sox recalled LHP Robby Scott from Pawtucket to fill Pedroia's roster spot.

Eduardo Nunez will start at second base against the Yankees on Saturday afternoon. According to manager John Farrell, the veteran second baseman is dealing with a recurrence of swelling and inflammation in his surgically repaired left knee and didn't respond favorably to treatment.
