US Navy destroyer conducts operation in South China Sea

US Navy destroyer conducts operation in South China Sea”

Speaking on condition of anonymity, USA officials have revealed the ship carried out the "freedom of navigation operation" within 12 nautical miles of the artificial island.

"The US destroyer's actions have violated Chinese and worldwide laws, as well as severely harmed China's sovereignty and security", Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said in a statement.

The Chinese navy "identified the US warship, warned and expelled it, " the spokesman said.

The U.S. and North Korea have been exchanging threats over North Korea's missile program.

They sought compliance with an arbitration ruling past year that invalidated China's claims in the South China Sea.

However, the US officials said that the USS John S. McCain sailed past an island in the disputed Spratly chain in the South China Sea, which is the third mission under the Trump administration.

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS John S. McCain sailed near China's artificial islands in the South China Sea on Thursday.

Wang's claim "is false" and China's reclamation work "did not end in mid-2015 with the completion of its artificial islands in the Spratlys", said the report.

"Its behaviour has violated the Chinese law and relevant global law, infringed upon China's sovereignty, disrupted peace, security and order of the relevant waters and put in jeopardy the facilities and personnel on the Chinese islands, and thus constitutes a serious political and military provocation".

It was the third mission aimed at challenging China's claim on the territory under the Trump administration.

Lorenzana did mention that his office would also ask the Department of Foreign Affairs headed by Sec. Geng reiterated the Chinese government's willingness to safeguard national sovereignty and its maritime rights and interests.

It added that USA moves "to pick quarrels and make troubles under the banner of "freedom of navigation" endangered lives and harmed regional stability.

"They happen off the coast of Canada" and "in the waters off shore of our major allies, friends, partners all around the world", she said.

The Chinese defence ministry said in a statement that the move was provocative and would severely damage the two nations' strategic trust and created difficulties and obstacles for their militaries. "We told them we are a United States [ship] conducting routine operations in worldwide waters".

The U.S. "freedom of navigation" operation has been previously conducted near China's reclaimed islands, called the Spratlys, or Nansha Islands, claimed also by the Philippines, Vietnam and Taiwan, among others.

The operations, according to anonymous officials, were meant to challenge China's claim on trade routes now contested by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam.
