As North Plans Missile Launch, US, S. Korea Ready War Games”

"All sides in and around the Korean Peninsula must do what they can to turn the situation into a dialogue phase before things get irremediable".

North Korea has taken a major step forward in realizing its goal of becoming a nuclear power, according to a Washington Post report on a confidential United States intelligence assessment that concludes Pyongyang has developed a nuclear warhead capable of fitting.

During the Mindanao Hour press briefing this August 11, Gen. Restituto Padilla Jr., Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Spokesperson, said that while North Korea's missile threat to Guam is a matter of concern, it is unlikely to hit the country.

South Korean shares slumped to a seven-week low on Thursday on foreign-selling amid anxiety over simmering tensions between the United States and North Korea, knocking the won currency to the weakest in a month.

The Pacific Command, headquartered in Hawaii, determines if the missile poses a threat to Japan, South Korea, Guam or Hawaii.

(CNN) - President Donald Trump will speak by phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping Friday night about North Korea, he told reporters. "Hopefully Kim Jong Un will find another path!" About 7,000 US soldiers and their families live on the island, which has a population of 160,000, according to the Associated Press.

The strip of land in the western Pacific Ocean is roughly the size of Chicago, and just 4 miles (6 km) wide at its narrowest point.

Naval Base Guam is an important outpost for USA fast-attack nuclear powered submarines that are a key means for gathering intelligence in the region, including off the Korean peninsula and in the South China Sea where China has been building military bases on man-made islands that have stirred tension across Asia.

"There are many moods on Guam right now", Hartz says.

The U.S. keeps a Naval base and Coast Guard station in the south, and an Air Force base in the north that saw heavy use during the Vietnam War.

The Defense Department owns about one-quarter of Guam's 212 square miles. The American military presence on Guam consists of two bases - Andersen Air Force Base in the north and Naval Base Guam in the south - which are home to 7,000 US troops.

Its population is mostly Roman Catholic and about a third are Chamorro, descendants of the indigenous people Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan first encountered in 1521.

Conservative lawmakers in Seoul in recent days have even called for a "nuclear balance" on the peninsula, saying Seoul should ask Washington to redeploy US nuclear weapons if South Korea is unable to develop its own. They are both managed under Joint Base Marianas.

Japan will reportedly discuss the issue with the USA during a meeting of foreign and defense ministers of the two nations set for next week.

Hecker said North Korea does not have a sophisticated nuclear weapon like those of the U.S., Russia, Britain, China or France, the major nuclear superpowers.

Tens of thousands of USA and South Korean forces are expected to participate in land, sea and air event. It has two 2-mile (3-kilometer) -long runways and large fuel and munitions storage facilities. Three weeks later, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage was legal throughout the U.S., including all its territories. It did so to compensate for US forces diverted from other bases in the Asia-Pacific region to fight in the Middle East. "This might make North Korea think that's just some verbal threat, so its attitude is getting tougher and tougher".

"The Guam resident concluded: "[North Korea's] tests don't seem to be too successful usually and we have missile defense".

But even these systems have their limitations and can't guarantee protection from shorter-range ballistic and cruise missiles. Then other classified intelligence systems begin to quickly calculate the trajectory of the missile based on the telemetry or electronic signals it emanates.
