Broncos sign DL Nelson Adams, officially place Billy Winn on IR”

The Broncos' backup defensive lineman suffered damage to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), medial collateral ligament and meniscus in his right knee during the preseason game Thursday at Chicago and is out for the season, a player source told 9News.

Less than 24 hours after learning that defensive end Billy Winn would miss the season with a torn ACL, the Denver Broncos on Saturday morning signed defensive tackle Nelson Adams, the team announced. He was released by the Steelers last week when the team signed cornerback JaCorey Shepherd to bolster its secondary. They would have had plans for Billy Winn to contribute in the regular season on their defensive line, but Adams is more of a developmental project.

The 23-year-old tackle was signed as an undrafted free agent in April, one of three defensive linemen out of the Pittsburgh Steelers' 2017 haul.

His performance was admirable past year with the Broncos, and he was penciled in as the no. 2 nose tackle on their official depth chart.

Winn appeared to plant his right leg awkwardly and got tangled under the pile on a Bears run late in the first quarter of the Broncos' preseason win at Chicago. Kyle Peko, the team's No. 3 nose tackle, is on the physically unable to perform list with a broken foot.

Adams will wear number 62 for the Broncos.
