Rumours have been swirling in Maiduguri that the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, has been hiding out in a compound with the same name.

The raid which is first of its kind since Humanitarian Workers and Non Governmental Organizations trooped into the state in the name of cartering for the well being of the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs in the north east.

The United Nations on Friday had halted various operations around the northeast, but following reassurances from Nigeria those resumed on Saturday, said Lundberg.

The property owned by a former governor of Borno State, the late Mala Kachalla, now serves as a hostel for United Nations humanitarian aid personnel.

A worsening of relations between the United Nations and Nigeria could risk destabilizing efforts to deliver aid to nearly seven million people affected by the eight-year conflict with Boko Haram, one of the biggest humanitarian crises in the world.

He stressed that the condone and search operation was not specifically targeted at the United Nations facility, but rather done in the general area of operation.

The Nigerian Army gained access into the United Nations base as parts of its cordon and search operation in the Operation Lafiya Dole against Boko Haram terrorists.

The commander added that about 30 houses were searched during the exercise, adding that no arrests were made.

An army statement revealed, that the said building, housing United Nations staff, didn't carry a United Nations designation, and the operation was successfully concluded, but no arrest was made, because the suspects were not found.

The insurgency has driven at least two million people from their homes, left tens of thousands on the brink of starvation and millions more without secure access to food. Tens of thousands live on the brink of starvation and millions more lack secure access to food.
