Latin America closes ranks after Trump threatens to use military in Venezuela”

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence will begin a two-day official visit Sunday to Colombia after President Donald Trump threatened neighboring Venezuela with potential military action.

"The people are suffering and they're dying", he added.

U.S. President Donald Trump's surprise comments on Friday may bring the beleaguered Maduro some respite in the region, just as Venezuela was on verge of becoming a pariah over its recent installation of a legislative superbody, widely condemned as a power grab by the ruling Socialists. Trump, according to an administration statement, will gladly speak with the nation's leader when democracy has been restored in the country.

"Our people seek harmony, integration and here we have a declaration of total unconditional support to Venezuela's democracy to its democratically-elected president and to the people who have been valiantly defending their rights and sovereignty", he said.

The global community has recently condemned Maduro's moves to consolidate power.

The unexpected warning shocked many Venezuelans.

Maduro expressed his desire to have a personal conversation with Trump, preferably when heads of state and government from around the world gather for the UN General Assembly in NY on September 20.

President Nicolas Maduro's new constituent assembly - which can rewrite the constitution and could override the opposition-controlled parliament - has been widely criticised as anti-democratic. Senator Sasse, a member of the US Senate Armed Services Committee, said that Congress does not plan to authorize a US-led war in Venezuela.

While Trump raised the specter of military intervention, his top national security aides have downplayed that possibility.

All this served as the backdrop for the reconvening of the National Constituent Assembly on Wednesday, Aug 9, where the topic of discussion was one of paramount importance: the struggle to diversify, strengthen, and address the character of Venezuela's economy in the face of the economic war waged by the national and worldwide forces of austerity, neoliberalism and counter-revolution.

"No. I don't think so", McMaster said. On Friday morning, Trump said "military solutions are now in place" should "North Korea act unwisely". Critics say the assembly is a bald maneuver by Maduro to cling to power as his popularity slumps under the weight of the country's economic crisis.

Following the meeting Arreaza is expected to deliver a government statement responding to Trump's remarks, which have been panned by government allies as a dramatic escalation of the country's political conflict.
