Nationals Bryce Harper carried off field with apparent knee injuryā€¯

Bryce Harper left in pain Saturday.

Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper left Saturday night's game against the San Francisco Giants in the bottom of the first inning with what appears to be a serious left knee injury after stepping on the top of the first base bag. The injury occurred when Harper attempted to beat out a groundball to the first baseman. But, when Harper hit first base, his left leg slipped on the bag, causing his knee to shoot straight back.

Harper remained on the ground for a few minutes as the ballpark went silent. The star outfielder put no weight on his left leg as he was helped off the field by hitting coach Rick Schu and head athletic trainer Paul Lessard.

The Nationals and Giants game had already been delayed for several hours due to rain, so Nationals fans were already a little annoyed. The unquestioned face of the Nationals franchise, he is under contract for just one more season before his much anticipated free agency commences.

Any significant injury to Harper could be devastating to the Nationals lineup, even with plenty of other talented players on the roster. He played in 103 of Washington's first 113 games.
