Pep Guardiola is reportedly eyeing a reunion with Sergio Busquets

Pep Guardiola is reportedly eyeing a reunion with Sergio Busquets”

And as the build-up to Saturday's Premier League opener away at Brighton continues, Guardiola revealed how grateful he was to the City board for their work in clinching the signing of Bernardo.

Brighton, who returned the top tier after a 34-year absence by finishing second in the Championship, last hosted City in a 2008 League Cup tie.

"It's a wonderful game for the club and supporters, as a first game in the Premier League, but we have to make sure it's a good day for the team as well", said Hughton.

Guardiola will travel to Brighton with new signings Bernardo Silva, Ederson Moraes, Kyle Walker and Danilo, although Benjamin Mendy is still working his way back to fitness after a thigh injury. In the next three or four years Manchester City will buy one, two, maybe three players. This group of players is going to stay for a long time at Manchester City.

With Yaya Toure and Ilkay Gundogan being more attack minded players, the need to sign a defensive midfielder has arisen.

The decision was made in July, before City had played the majority of their pre-season friendlies.

"I think Manchester City be right up there challenging for the title", said Hughton.

"Hopefully next season I will be here and we are not going to spend how we have this season".

"We did it earlier, so we were lucky because now it would be so much more expensive with what has happened in the last weeks. Sooner or later it's going to finish", he said.

City are likely to be in the market for a new holding midfielder following the sale of €5.25million sale of Fernando to Galatasaray.

And they have also let six of last season's title-winning squad leave, including John Terry and Nemanja Matic, with Diego Costa seemingly soon to join them.

"People say in my first press conference we are favourites".

Chelsea have 13 or 14 very good players who will match anyone.

"I will do my best like I did last season".

Guardiola seemed unprepared for the rude physicality of English football and was derided for saying he was "not a coach for the tackles" after a one-sided 4-2 defeat at Leicester City. "We are going to see at the end of the season what happens, knowing how hard it is".
