US F-18 closes Bahrain Airport after "uncomfortable" landing

US F-18 closes Bahrain Airport after

The U.S. Navy says an F-18 fighter jet has crash landed at Bahrain International Airport and the pilot ejected from the aircraft after it "departed the runway".

Upon realizing the engine malfunction, the pilot attempted to land the F-18 at the Shaikh Isa Air Base in Bahrain, but was forced to make a hard landing at the commercial airport instead. The incident resulted in the closure of the airport runway for safety reasons for all departing and incoming aircraft.

Bahrain's Transportation and Telecommunications Ministry referred to the occurrence as a "minor incident" and claimed that flights resumed normally a few hours after the uncontrolled crash landing. The pilot ejected from the aircraft after it ran off the runway and was unharmed.

An investigation was opened to determine the causes of the incident, said Mr.

Most flight arrivals on Saturday afternoon were listed as delayed on Manama airport's official website.

Bahrain is also home to an under-construction British naval base. It has a strategic importance for the u.s. operations in the framework of the fight against the group jihadist islamic State (EI) in the region. The kingdom has been gripped by unrest since 2011, when the country's majority Shiite population took to the streets to demand an elected government.

Bahrain is an island off the coast of Saudi Arabia in the Persian Gulf. The pilot had taken off from a USA supercarrier in the Gulf before the incident on Saturday.
