Vehicle plows into crowd during 'Unite the Right' rally in Charlottesville

Vehicle plows into crowd during 'Unite the Right' rally in Charlottesville”

Charlottesville Police Captain Victor Mitchell said earlier that police expected between 2,000 and 6,000 protesters and counter-demonstrators.

Matt Korbon, a 22-year-old University of Virginia student, said counter-protesters were marching when "suddenly there was just this tire screeching sound".

Footage from another angle showed the vehicle speeding in reverse to flee the scene. The incident took place about two blocks from the park displaying the statue of Robert E. Lee, who headed the Confederate army in the American Civil War.

She said her son hadn't given her any details about the rally but that she told him "to be careful" and to peaceful.

Lt. H. Jay Cullen of Midlothian and Trooper-Pilot Burke M.M. Bates of Quinton were killed in the crash, Virginia State Police reports.

At least one person was seen lying on the ground receiving medical treatment from the incident which involved three vehicles, according to the city's police department. His remarks have brought reactions from Republicans as well as Democrats.

Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring said the violence, chaos and loss of life in Charlottesville is not the fault of "many sides".

But at no point did Trump mention white supremacists, white nationalists or groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and neo-Nazis, whose participation in the event and inflammatory rhetoric precipitated numerous violent skirmishes before the fatal auto collision.

"Our state police and law enforcement family at-large are mourning this tragic outcome to an already challenging day", said Colonel W. Steven Flaherty, Virginia State Police Superintendent.

Mike Signer, the Charlottesville Mayor condemned the demonstration by white nationalists in a Facebook post.

The confrontation was a stark reminder of the growing political polarization since Trump's election a year ago.

After the park was cleared, protesters carrying Confederate flags, Nazi symbols and other anti-Semitic signs marched to McIntire Park, a larger location where city officials had previously tried to move the rally. "I couldn't talk for a while", he said.

- Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) August 12, 2017But the incitement of hatred that got us here is as real and condemnable as the white supremacists in our streets.

If he comes out and condemns actual white supremacy, he loses the only part of his base that remains: white nationalists and other right-wing nut jobs who hate minorities and regularly vote against their own self-interests.

James said that "it's sad what's going on in Charlottesville", and he added what appears to be a statement directed at President Donald Trump.
