War with North Korea would be catastrophic, warns Mattis

War with North Korea would be catastrophic, warns Mattis”

"Do I have military options?"

The Pentagon chief on Wednesday issued a carefully worded statement telling North Korea it would be "grossly" outmatched in any conflict with the U.S., and warning Pyongyang to stop considering any action that risked "the destruction of its people".

Those looking for words of comfort in regards to North Korea and its nuclear weapons program need not read any further.

Mattis' comments come on the heels of North Korea's state media announcement Thursday that its military would devise a plan by mid-August to fire four intermediate range missiles at the US territory of Guam as a "crucial warning to the U.S". "Let's see what he does with Guam", Trump said in apparent reference to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Striking a defiant tone on Thursday evening, he told reporters: "Maybe it wasn't tough enough". "And I don't think we are".

"We want to use diplomacy".

"On the situation on the Korean peninsula obviously the Secretary General remains extremely concerned by the ongoing situation; he's troubled by the increase in confrontational rhetoric that we've seen", a spokesman for Guterres said. "That shows where the Trump administration goes in terms of the prioritizing of the threat but also how to deal with it in a diplomatically effective manner".

Meanwhile, various media outlets have reported that North Korea now has the ability to miniaturize a nuclear warhead for placement on an intercontinental ballistic missile and the regime has threatened to "envelope Guam with fire". The move was condemned by United States, South Korea and Japan.

But it also said that if the USA and South Korea took a first strike against North Korea, China should intervene.

Matthew Rycroft told reporters at United Nations headquarters in NY that the U.S. and UK have been very clear in demanding a halt to North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes. In dealing with North Korea, Acting Assistant Secretary Susan Thornton and Ambassador Joseph Yun have been stellar in helping us develop these policies and carry them out,"Washington examiner quoted Tillerson as saying".

It also said that China and Russian Federation should enhance coordination to let other parties know they would not stand aside should their security be threatened by the escalating tensions.
