Wenger thankful Giroud turned down chance to leave

Wenger thankful Giroud turned down chance to leave”

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Friday night's match-winner Olivier Giroud has made a decision to stay at Arsenal next season, ending interest from Everton, West Ham United and Marseille.

The Gunners emerged victorious against Craig Shakespeare's side with a 4-3 win in a breathtaking match at the Emirates last night to get their new campaign off to the flawless start.

"I opened the door for him at some stage as it's important for him to play but I don't want him to go", Wenger said at the post-match news conference.

The Gunners trailed 3-2 with seven minutes to go before Aaron Ramsey and Giroud swung the game back in the home side's favour at a euphoric Emirates Stadium.

Vardy then slid the visitors ahead from Marc Albrighton's cross, before Danny Welbeck drew Arsenal level at the end of a pulsating opening half.

Arsene Wenger's inspired changes paid dividends, though, as Ramsey levelled things up and then two minutes later Giroud turned the game completely on its head as Arsenal ended their opening-game hoodoo.

"We kept going and the spirit of the team was absolutely outstanding", Wenger said.

The Gunners were a goal up inside two minutes as Alexandre Lacazette scored on debut with only his second touch of the game - heading in Mohamed Elneny's cross.

"He's a fantastic guy and he's committed".

"He doesn't want to leave and I'm happy that he wants to stay".

"Not only as a player, he is a fantastic player, b ut as well in the group - he has a big weight in the squad and it was a relief for me that he chose to stay". We lost the ball for the second goal and lacked some experience.

"The first goal was from a short corner and we were not focused enough".

"Previously in the Premier League we've not got off to the best of starts, so it meant a lot for us to get a good start and get three points today".

Now with a freakish back four of (from right to left) Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Monreal, Kolasinac and Hector Bellerin, Arsenal pushed for an equaliser, and on 83 minutes it came.
