You Should Definitely Try to See the Perseid Meteor Shower Tonight”

Across Idaho and the nation, people are gearing up for a celestial event of epic proportions: the August 21 solar eclipse. The Perseid Meteor Shower, which will see meteors streak through the night sky, will be active this weekend and present a dazzling sight for intrepid stargazers.

Perseids are bits of the comet Swift-Tuttle and often create the most unbelievable meteor shower of the year. In 1833, another Leonid storm reportedly had a rate of at least tens of thousands meteors per hour. Light pollution can make it more hard to see the shower.

The comet is the largest object known to repeatedly pass by the earth and has a nucleus width of about 26 km. "But with this bright moon now, visibility will be less spectacular". Debris from the comet breaks off and can drift in space for years before being captured by Earth's gravity and falling into the sky.

The Perseids usually have a flare rate of about 80-100 per hour at 60 km per second speed, but this year flare rates are reduced by half owing to the bright moon, he added.

Bill Wojcik, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Boise, said Treasure Valley residents should have a good view of the meteor shower, though clouds could interfere.

Even if your attempts to view the Perseid showers are stymied, do not be too disappointed.

The Perseid Meteor Shower peaked at dawn Saturday morning, but with better atmospheric conditions, the best chance for us to see the show is tonight.
