Android O introduces in-band ringtones on connected Bluetooth devices

All these features are in the foreground of the new version, but there are a few internal tweaks that constitute bigger changes. And this has always been the case when it comes to Android's support for Bluetooth, which lacks several seemingly minor features which actually turn out to be quite useful. The next version of Android in particular seems to be rectifying many Bluetooth related complaints people have been having.

When in-band ringing is enabled, instead of hearing a default beeping or notification sound that comes pre-configured with your Bluetooth device, your phone's custom ringtone plays through the connected speakers or headphones.

Interestingly, the Bluetooth in-band ringtone feature has been requested by users since 2009.

Whats “in-band ringtones”? Essentially, it allows your Bluetooth headset to ring with whatever ringtone youve set on your phone. This has been a part of the Hands-Free Profile (warning: PDF download link) for many years now, and iOS has had support for this specification for a long while.

First spotted by XDA, Google added the ability to turn on in-band ringing in one of the Android 8.0 Developer Preview builds. Thanks to third-party versions of the Android OS, we have been able to get some much-needed features without waiting for Google.

Android 8.0 is approaching its final release, which is why we are digging for all the new features that are available in the preview versions.
