Auburn names Jarrett Stidham starting quarterback”

The Auburn Tigers have named a starting quarterback for the 2017 football season.

He becomes the fourth QB in Malzahn's five seasons as coach to start an opener. "The team is excited for Jarrett and ready for the season!"

Malzahn gave an indication that Stidham, who joined the team's practices before the Sugar Bowl, would get the nod by giving him first-team reps from the opening day of spring practice.

Stidham announced a year ago that he was transferring from Baylor, then spent the fall semester at McLennan CC in Waco, Texas, but did not play football.

White started 16 games over the past two seasons, including 10 last season while completing an SEC-best 63.9 percent of his passes for 1,679 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions.

Stidham and the Tigers will kick off the regular season on September 2 against Georgia Southern.

Stidham, a sophomore, has been competing for the starting role with junior Sean White and freshman Malik Willis during the beginning of fall practice.
