Could This Person Be Jon Snow's Father?

Spoilers below for Game of Thrones Season 7, episode 5. So if you haven't seen the episode yet and hope to avoid them best not cross into the risky lands beyond this Wall.

Sunday's Game of Thrones innocuously inserted a huge revelation during an off-the-cuff exchange between Gilly (Hannah Murray) and Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) that pretty much changes everything we know about Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington. Instead, after some lively debate, Daenerys and Jon Snow split on Game Of Thrones. Gilly says that this Septon issued an annulment to a certain Prince Rhaegar - you know, as in, Daenerys' brother Rhaegar Targaryen (!) - and then married him to somebody else at the same time (!).

But as the plucky and curious Gilly poured over Maester Maynard's long, boring treatise recording windows, annulments, and poops, she uncovered a very important piece of the puzzle.

But now we have Jon, who is already King in the North, a title he took on somewhat reluctantly at the end of Season 6, but seems to have finally become at ease with. The Tower of Joy was located on the northern edge of the Red Mountains of Dorne.

Until now the exact nature of Lyanna's disappearance with Rhaegar Targaryen remained unclear. Not only is there another Targaryen in the fold, but Jon Snow also has the stronger claim when all's said and done.

While she and Sam were reading through records at Citadel, she came across this juicy nugget: Soon after Rhaegar Targaryen had married, he'd gotten annulment and partook in a secret wedding ceremony at dawn. He is a true Targaryen, and now has a legitimate claim to rule that not even Daenerys can argue about. That makes Jon the rightful King of Westeros. During this time, the King's son, Rhaegar Targaryen, married to Elia Martell, sister of Oberyn Martell, AKA The Viper. What's even crazier is that the High Septon wrote it down and there is documented evidence.

But now the show may well have taken things a step further, and confirmed something even more important about the King in The North's heritage. In that moment, we can see her feelings towards Jon begin to develop.

Nope. Because they were actually doing their duty protecting the dead prince's wife, Lyanna, who was carrying Rhaegar's unborn son and - by virtue of the marriage - legitimate first-in-line heir to the Iron Throne, baby Jon. Dany, who has opted to work from home today, is attempting to have a meeting with her advisors, only to be rudely interrupted by the sounds of Jon Snow and his Nights Watch day-laborers drilling into the island's core in search of dragon glass. The information is offered up for the audience alone, although there is a small chance one of them will remember Rhaegar's story once the truth of Jon's parentage comes out.

For being the legal son of a prince he sure is stupid sometimes.

When you add everything up, it does seem like a very well thought out theory!

Just because the law isn't on her side doesn't mean Daenerys will simply give up on her goal to lead Westeros.
