Federer cruises to Rogers Cup semifinals”

Shapovalov will next meet the victor of a match later Friday between fourth-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany and Kevin Anderson of South Africa.

Shapovalov also beat 10-time French Open champion Nadal to get into the quarter-finals and upset former US Open victor Juan Martin del Potro in the second round.

Zverev ended 18-year-old Canadian Denis Shapovalov's stunning run with a 6-4 7-5 victory in the second semi-final.

That left Federer serving for the set and the 36-year-old made no mistake, holding to love in a game sealed by an ace. Shapovalov broke Mannarino to take a 5-4 lead in the deciding set and then served out the match.

The Canadian broke immediately after a rain delay but Mannarino hit back in the next game.

There was one last rally from Shapovalov, who saved two match points and earned three break point opportunities of his own, though Zverev fended off all of them.

19th-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer showcased a spirited performance as he bounced back from a set down against Spain's David Ferrer to book his place into the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup on Friday.

The pair met in a Davis Cup World Group play-off in 2012 with Federer winning 6-1, 6-4, 6-4.

Federer said he knows Haase well from serving with him on the ATP player council and from practising together. "Sometimes he tends to just roll the ball in and use the big serve, or he uses a slice a lot and comes in". I'm most happy that I'm actually really healthy going into the finals.

Bautista Agut struggled mightily on his serve as he was broken three times and won just 65 per cent of his first serve points. But my game plan worked better against Bautista-Agut than against Ferrer. I haven't wasted too much energy.

"I played a lot of good matches, especially against Dimitrov", said Haase. Then I started this year winning back-to-back matches against really good players.

Haase improved to 5-0 all-time against Schwartzman with his comeback after losing the opening set. I didn't, but I managed to win because I kept fighting.
