Thomas wins PGA for first career major title

Thomas wins PGA for first career major title”

This time round, Thomas entered the final round two shots behind leader Kevin Kisner.

The 24-year old won by two shots over Francesco Molinari, Patrick Reed and Louis Oosthuizen, who all tied for second place.

"I was in contention in the final group for a good finish", he said of the June major at Erin Hills in Wisconsin.

Justin Thomas poses with the Wanamaker Trophy after winning the 2017 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club on August 13, 2017 in Charlotte, N.C. He followed that up by shooting a 5-under 66 in the second round and a two-under 69 in the third round.

Kisner needed to hole his second shot to the 18th to force a play-off, but he tugged it into the creek and Thomas was left to celebrate his major breakthrough and another moment to savour in a memorable 2017, which began with two wins in Hawaii and included a sensational round of 59 at the Sony Open.

He tied for ninth at this year's U.S. Open. "If I did this every year, I would go down as the greatest ever to play the game".

"I want to learn from this experience, but I don't know what it is that I have to do in order to win". He could become the first Japanese player to win a major.

Kisner faded at the end, beginning with a three-putt for bogey on 16.

That tie lasted just a few minutes as Matsuyama, Kisner, Chris Stroud and Molinari all dropped shots, with Thomas then chipping in for birdie on the 13th to move two shots clear. I was comfortable with where my game was and with the prep I had put in.

It was the third year in a row the PGA has produced a first-time major champion.

He'll probably nitpick a little - like with that closing bogey - but there's not much to critique about his Sunday 68, especially the way Thomas stepped on everyone's throats with that birdie on 17 that all but clinched the Wanamaker Trophy. At the beginning of the final round, only three of the top 25 players on the leaderboard had previously won majors (Australia's Jason Day, South Africa's Louis Oosthuizen and Sweden's Henrik Stenson). "I actually went back for one more club and got greedy with it".

The 24-year-old - whose father is a club professional and whose late grandfather was a long-time professional who qualified for the 1962 US Open - became the eighth first-time major victor since 2015.

Thomas' playing partner, Japanese hope Hideki Matsuyama, enjoyed an up and down day with six bogeys and five birdies to finish alongside Rickie Fowler on five under as his dream of becoming Japan's first ever major victor never materialised.

"I told him, "that's (expletive) unbelievable", Thomas said, per For The Win's Luke Kerr-Dineen.

"I can't play with him anymore - it's no fun", he said with a laugh.

"I made enough birdies, but I had too many bogeys", Reed said.

"It felt okay through the Masters and I switched it off for a couple of weeks because I was getting married, going on honeymoon". So it wasn't very realistic for me to have a great chance to win that tournament.

Justin Thomas, the son of a PGA professional, had the right formula.

Kisner shot a 3-over 74 on Sunday and finished four strokes behind victor Justin Thomas. "I'm just excited for that, I'd say more than anything".
