Yemen cholera cases soar past half-million

Yemen cholera cases soar past half-million”

Nearly 2,000 people have died since April, when the virus' spread began to accelerate, according to the World Health Organization.

Impoverished Yemen has remained in a state of civil war since 2014، when Houthi rebels overran much of the country، including the capital Sanaa.

Cholera is believed to have affected more than 500,000 people and killed almost 2,000 since late April, the World Health Organization said Monday.

Although spread of the deadly waterborne virus, which started last fall, has slowed in some areas, newly affected districts are recording large numbers of cases and that has helped push the infection rate to an estimated 5,000 people a day, the World Health Organization reported.

The epidemic has spread rapidly because of the ongoing war and the depleting hygiene and sanitation conditions across the country. According to the ICRC، over three million people have fled their homes since the start of the Yemen conflict، and more than 20 million throughout the country are in need of humanitarian assistance.

Cholera causes acute diarrhoea and dehydration and the disease is spread by the consumption of food or water tainted with human feces.

The clean water supply is severely curtailed in the majority of the country and waste collection has ceased in major cities.

"Thousands of people are sick, but there are not enough hospitals, not enough medicines, not enough clean water", he said, also lamenting that numerous doctors and nurses needed to rein in the outbreak had not been paid for almost a year. These doctors and nurses are the backbone of the health response. "They must be paid their wages so that they can continue to save lives", said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. WHO said its response includes working with partners to set up cholera treatment clinics and rehabilitation facilities, the delivery of medical supplies and support for the national health effort.

WHO said more than 99 per cent of people sick with suspected cholera who can access health services are surviving.

In his statement, Tedros called for a political solution to the conflict in Yemen.

"The people of Yemen can not bear it much longer they need peace to rebuild their lives and their country", he said.
