4 arrested by Mumbai Police cyber cell for leaking season 7 episode”

Earlier this month, Star India had confirmed the leak of an unreleased episode of the popular HBO show Game of Thrones, almost two days before its scheduled airing time. The hackers released three episodes of the upcoming new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, as well as other content, over the weekend. The arrested include a current and a former employee of Prime Focus Technologies, technology partner of TV broadcaster Star India Pvt. Ltd.

Prime Focus, a Mumbai-based company that stores and processes the series for Indian streaming website Hotstar, had lodged a complaint with police. They're being held in police custody until August 21 while authorities continue their investigation. An internal investigation conducted by the company uncovered the unauthorized access had occurred on one of its servers in either Mumbai, Bangalor or Kolkata. The arrested accused have been identified as Abhishek Ghadiyal, Mohammad Sohail, Bhaskar Joshi and Alok Sharma. HBO didn't provide any details about the leaks and had said that all inquiries are being led by its network partner, Star India.

"We have arrested all the four and now we are going to interrogate them separately to know on whose instruction the episode was leaked, and who stood to benefit from it", a senior officer close to the investigation said. Police have invoked sections 408 (criminal breach of trust by clerk or servant), and 34 (common intention) of the IPC, as well as 43 (damage to computer, computer system, etc) and 66 (computer related offences) of the IT Act.

"We believe that valuable intellectual property is a critical part of the development of the creative industry and strict enforcement of the law is essential to protecting it", the company said in the statement. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the arrests and posted a statement from Star India and Novi Digital.
