Bodybuilder dies after her body rejects strict egg and protein diet

Bodybuilder dies after her body rejects strict egg and protein diet”

Australian bodybuilder Meegan Hefford's family blames her death on an undiagnosed genetic disorder and excessive protein intake, according to Yahoo News.

Meegan a mother of two children was found lying unconscious in her apartment and was quickly taken to the hospital.

Urea cycle disorder, which affects one in 8000 people is a genetic disorder which prevents the body from removing ammonia from the bloodstream. This prevents the body from properly breaking down protein, which can lead to risky levels of ammonia in the bloodstream and too much fluid in the brain.

After she died, doctors firstly listed her death due to an "intake of bodybuilding supplements".

Meegan Hefford had been consuming a number of protein shakes and egg whites in a bid to improve her fitness.

The 25-year-old did not know about the disorder, and now her family is calling for more restrictions on the diet industry and believe more warnings should be put out in relation to high-protein diets.

The 25 year old mother was competing as a bodybuilder since the year 2014.

Her mother said to her: "I think you're doing too much at the gym, calm down, slow it down". Hefford used to complain about feeling "lethargic and weird", but she didn't stop training.

"I couldn't believe what the doctors were telling me, she was dying", Ms White told Perth Now. "I said, 'You have to give her more time, ' because she didn't look sick, she looked attractive".

Untreated, the high amounts of ammonia can cause brain damage, coma and eventually death. She had herself submitted under a hard routine of exercises and a rough, full of proteins diet for a competition in September.

White said she didn't even know her daughter was using protein shakes or supplements until after Hefford's death, when she discovered half a dozen containers of protein shakes in her daughter's kitchen.

Adding, 'The sale of these products needs to be more regulated'.

"There is definitely a need for better regulation of supplements and vitamins and any substance that makes a therapeutic claim", Dr Khorshid said. "This case is obviously tragic and illustrates that you may not know you have a health issue that alters the way you metabolize".

He said that protein shakes had become trendy but advised body builders at his East Perth gym O'Mara Fitness to avoid supplements and eat real food.

"Excess supplements can be more risky if someone already has health conditions, like renal impairment, but people won't necessarily know they have that, so that's why people need to be cautious and stick to what the guidelines say".
