Boston Blocks Free Speech Rally, Tells Organizers: We Don't Want You Here”

In response to the rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday, Boston officials and Mayor Martin Walsh had a message on Monday for hate groups planning a rally in Boston this weekend: They are not welcome.

The group has repeatedly denounced having any connection or resemblance to the rally that took place in Charlottesville last weekend, which grew into a violent clash between white nationalists and counter-protesters and ended in three deaths.

Walsh said President Trump should strike a similar tone when it comes to hate groups.

"We don't even know who this group is, we are not sure if it's multiple groups at this point", the mayor told reporters in Roxbury.

"Boston does not welcome you here, Boston does not want you here, Boston rejects your message", Mayor Marty Walsh said.

"Boston does not welcome you here. We don't want to you spewing the hate we saw (in Virginia), and the loss of life". "We're going to be working together this whole week to send a message to everyone that's heading to Boston, those that are of the mindset of white supremacy to those who understand we're all God's children - we're working together". "What happened in Charlottesville was an act of terrorism, where an individual sought to hurt people and killed an innocent woman bystander". A tragedy perpetrated by white supremacists that disturbed, as it should, Americans everywhere.

The rally is planned for Saturday at Boston Common and hosted by Boston Free Speech, according to the Facebook page for the event.

The group also said some speakers - many of whom are self-ascribed libertarians - backed out of the event as well.

Officials said the group has not yet filed for a permit, and the city will decide what to do if the group does file for a permit.

The groups suggest to Walsh that "it would be prudent for the city to take time to develop an appropriate safety plan, and to release pertinent information about the safety plan to the general public, including concerned residents represented by the undersigned organizations".

"We will not tolerate any acts of violence, any misbehavior or any vandalism whatsoever".

Gavin McInnes, leader of the Proud Boys, an alt-right group that wears costumes, said before Walsh spoke that he would no longer be attending the rally, claiming that Walsh was revoking the permit in an attempt to incite violence.
