DJI Adds Offline Mode for Incognito Flights

DJI Adds Offline Mode for Incognito Flights”

The development surfaced weeks after the United States Army told its personnel to immediately discontinue use of the company's drones, citing "cyber vulnerabilities associated with DJI products". We announced it today because enterprise customers with serious data security have made clear they need something like this for a while, and the Army memo reinforced that concern for them.

"We are creating local data mode to address the needs of our enterprise customers, including public and private organizations that are using DJI technology to perform sensitive operations around the world", Brendan Schulman, DJI Vice President of Policy and Legal Affairs, said in a statement.

DJI has said that it does not collect images or flight logs unless users share them, but the new local data mode will prevent any accidental syncing.

The company's pilot app connects to its servers to do things like updating maps and real-time information about flight restrictions that exist in certain areas.

However perhaps in a bid to win back the trust (and contract) with the US Army and other governments around the world, DJI has since announced that they'll be introducing a new feature to their drones which will allow drone users to fly their drones without internet data transfer, meaning that whatever data is being recorded while it flies will no longer be transmitted back to DJI's servers. However, it will provide an enhanced level of data assurance for sensitive flights, such as those involving critical infrastructure, commercial trade secrets, governmental functions or other similar operations.

In a statement, DJI's head of enterprise partnerships, Jan Gasparic, said the move is necessary as the company's customer base rapidly expands from hobbyists and personal drone pilots to pros as well as those in commercial, government, and education sectors.

Recently, the USA army decided it would stop using the Chinese firm's drones.

"We're not responding to the Army, which has never explained its concerns to us", DJI communications director for North America Adam Lisberg told TechCrunch.

Now with local data mode activated, all DJI apps will be restricted from sending or receiving any data over the Internet, thus providing better security. "We are pleased to be able to develop local data mode as part of our drive to serve our customers' needs as well as advocate for their interests".

DJI has been developing the feature for several months and will be included in future versions of DJI apps. DJI stated that the newest feature will not be available where an Internet connection is required or where local regulations require having one.
