Guam radio stations accidentally broadcast emergency warning

Guam radio stations accidentally broadcast emergency warning”

"A broadcast station or cable system has issued a civil danger warning for the following countries/areas: Guam; at 12:25 a.m. on August 15, 2017, effective until 12:40 a.m. Message from KTWGKSTO".

Guam, a Pacific Ocean island and US territory, has been threatened recently with missile attacks from North Korea.

USA authorities have pledged to protect the island - which also houses thousands of U.S. military personnel - while authorities on Guam have issued precautionary guidelines on how to react in the event of a nuclear missile strike.

Several concerned listeners were reported to have called police after the stations triggered the Emergency Alert Broadcast System, issuing "a civil danger" warning at 12:25 am that was later confirmed to be a mistake.

"According to KSTO, this was only a test".

Shortly before the press conference, officials said Guam's threat level hasn't changed.

The alert prompted Guam's homeland security adviser George Charfauros to urge residents and visitors to "remain calm".

"We continue communication with our federal and military partners and have not received official statement warranting any concern for imminent threat to Guam", he added. Homeland Security worked with the radio station to ensure the human error will repeat itself, the release stated.

But the office maintained that the loss of power was not connected to the emergency alerts, nor to any threat to the island.

Last week, North Korea detailed a specific plan to fire four missiles into the waters around the island which is home to 162,000 people and hosts two USA military bases, the Guardian reported.
