Organizer cancels September 16 monument rally in Richmond”

Brag Bowling with the group, Americans for Richmond Monument Preservation, says they have pulled their permit request for the September 16 rally at the Lee monument in Richmond.

Referencing the removal of Confederate monuments in cities like New Orleans, the post said that the group would take "use all available resources to prevent it from happening" in Richmond. After the violence this past weekend in Charlottesville, Bowling said hate groups have effectively done a "hecklers' veto" of his application because he does not want to bring them from Charlottesville to Richmond.

If granted, the group will hold an event at the Robert E. Lee Monument on Monument Avenue in Richmond on September 16.

"Currently, as I've always said, since my remarks earlier on this year, the way those statues stand now, they're a shameful representation of the past that we all disagree with", Stoney said.

Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney recently set-up the Monument Avenue Commission to explore adding new statues to Richmond's Monument Avenue and/or adding context to existing Confederate monuments that line the historic street.

Bowling said Monday he was looking forward to meeting with police and the city to talk about the rally.

The Richmond Times Dispatch reports that Bowling says he doesn't "want to be part of an event where people are hurt or killed".
