These CEOs Are Sticking With Trump”

Updated at 2:30 a.m. ET TuesdayBy the end of the day on Monday, three CEOs had announced they were leaving President Trump's American Manufacturing Council.

On Sunday, however, the White House added: "The president said very strongly in his statement yesterday that he condemns all forms of violence, bigotry, and hatred, and of course that includes white supremacists, KKK, neo-Nazi, and all extremist groups".

Former Uber Technologies Inc [UBER.UL] CEO Travis Kalanick quit the business advisory council in February amid pressure from activists and employees who opposed the administration's immigration policies.

After that, AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka joined the CEOs of Merck, Under Armour, Intel and the Alliance for American Manufacturing in leaving the council. "I hope this will change, and I remain willing to serve when it does", he wrote in a blog post on the company's website late Monday.

Walt Disney Co. Chairman and CEO Bob Iger resigned for the same reason from the President's Strategic and Policy Forum, which Trump established to advise him on how government policy impacts economic growth and job creation.

Hours after Frazier resigned, Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank also said he was stepping down from the council.

Michael Dell is the only tech CEO left on Trump's council, although he's still in good company.

Trump lashed out at Frazier on Twitter, criticizing Merck for what he said were its high drug prices.

Frazier, who as a lawyer helped free a black death row inmate falsely accused of murder, and who now leads one of the country's most powerful drug companies, was first to quit the manufacturing council.

At first, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk defended his roles on Trump's manufacturing and economic advisory councils. "We must resign on behalf of America's working people, who reject all notion of legitimacy of those bigoted groups".

Kenneth Fraizer, the chief executive of drugmaker Merck and an African-American, said he left the advisory council because of the president's reaction after the violence between white supremacists and counter protesters.

"Earlier today, I called on all leaders to condemn the white supremacists and their ilk who marched and committed violence", Krzanich said in a statement.

"Our commitment to diversity and inclusion is unwavering, and we will remain active champions for these efforts", said a spokesman for Campbell Soup CEO Denise Morrison.

General Electric said the company has "no tolerance for hate, bigotry or racism".

Representatives for at least five other companies - Dow Chemical, Whirlpool, Campbell Soup, International Paper and Nucor - voiced similar sentiments.

The manufacturing jobs council had 28 members initially, but it has shrunk since it was formed earlier this year as executives retire, are replaced, or, as with Frazier and Musk, resign. So far, the majority of CEOs and business leaders that are sitting on the two major, federal panels, are condemning racism, but say they want to keep their seats at the table.
