How major U.S. stock market indexes fared Thursday”

After three solid sessions in a row, U.S. stocks retreated early Thursday with Dow members Cisco Systems and Wal-Mart Stores dipping after releasing their earnings reports.

High-dividend stocks like utilities and real estate companies fared slightly better than the rest of the market, although they still finished lower. The chain saw a 1.8 percent rise in same-store sales which boosted revenues, but profits plunged 23.2 percent to $2.9 billion, in part due investments in e-commerce.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gave up 38.10 points, or 1.5 percent, to 2,430.01.

U.S. stocks finished higher Wednesday after a report showing Federal Reserve policymakers divided over anemic USA inflation despite the strengthening job market. Also sagging were the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq, each down 1.4% and 1.8% respectively.

Victoria's Secret owner L Brands fell 3.6 percent after cutting its full-year earnings forecast.

The Russell 2000 is up 1.81 points, or 0.1 percent. Elsewhere, Apple retreated $2.10, or 1.3 percent, to $158.85 while software maker Adobe Systems skidded $3.16, or 2.1 percent, to $148.64 and chipmaker Texas Instruments fell $1.82, or 2.2 percent, to $80.64.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (NYSE: WMT) posted strong quarterly results but still declined 1.5%, dragging other retailers down with it. But that wasn't enough to sustain a recent rally in the company's stock, and its shares lost $1.28, or 1.6 percent, to $79.70.
