Trump tells Calvo he's behind Guam

Trump said he did not want to talk about diplomatic "back channels" with North Korea after US media reports that Joseph Yun, the USA envoy for North Korea policy, had engaged in diplomacy for several months with Pak Song Il, a senior diplomat at Pyongyang's United Nations mission, on the deteriorating ties and the issue of Americans imprisoned in North Korea.

Trump, vacationing at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf resort, earlier took to Twitter to warn North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that U.S. "military solutions are now fully in place, locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely".

"Kim Jong Un of North Korea made a very wise and well reasoned decision".

Trump's latest comments were a continuation of days of incendiary rhetoric, including his warning on Tuesday that the United States would unleash "fire and fury" on Pyongyang if it threatened the United States.

On Thursday, Trump doubled down on his warnings, saying his "fire and fury" remark may not have been tough enough.

Xi's comments came hours after Trump warned North Korea that the United States military was "locked and loaded" as Pyongyang accused the U.S. leader of driving the Korean peninsula to the brink of nuclear war.

There has been no indication that any actual attack on the Pacific island is imminent.

"It's never been a vehicle for negotiations and this doesn't constitute substantive U.S. -DPRK dialogue", he said, using the acronym for North Korea's formal name, Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The phone conversations came a day after Trump ratcheted up tensions with North Korea, saying the military is "locked and loaded" to deal with the regime's provocations.

KCNA said the plan would presented to Kim by mid-August.

North Korea's Minju Joson newspaper, meanwhile, lashed back at the an editorial Saturday. "We are totally fine over here, and we have. confidence in our defense capabilities".

During a GOP presidential debate in September 2015, Trump railed on the "maniac" in North Korea while answering a question about Planned Parenthood and women's health issues.

Trump also said this week that Kim Jong Un has "disrespected our country greatly".

"You'll see, you'll see".

Two of the US' regional allies, South Korea and Japan, are taking steps to counter a potential escalation of tensions between Pyongyang and Washington.

The ministry did not confirm whether Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera has already issued an order to shoot down incoming missiles.

Japan is in possession of US-supplied missile shield technology, including Patriot PAC-3 batteries, but these would likely need to be redeployed to have any chance of shooting down North Korean missiles. Pyongyang says it will be ready to send its missile launch plan to Kim for approval just before or as the drills begin.

Tension in the region rose when North Korea staged two nuclear bomb tests previous year and increased further when it launched two intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) tests in July in defiance of world powers, prompting the United Nations to tighten sanctions on Pyongyang.

Joseph Yun, the U.S. envoy for North Korea, and Pak Song-Il, a senior North Korean diplomat at the United Nations, are said to be leading the talks.

North Korea said almost 3.5 million workers, party members and soldiers volunteered to join or re-join its army to resist new UN sanctions and to fight against the United States in the current geopolitical tension between Pyongyang and Washington.

The President said he wanted to give his "highest respect and regards" to the people of Guam and that the military is rock solid "we've got the best in the world", he added.

The Global Times said China will "firmly resist any side which wants to change the status quo of the areas where China's interests are concerned".
