Court to declare sentences of 1993 serial blasts convicts”

The court has already convicted Salem in the Pradeep Jain murder case.

Mumbai: The special TADA court will pronounce the quantum of punishment for 1993 blasts convicts Abu Salem and four others on September 7.

The five convicts named in the charge sheet for their role in the blasts apart from Abu Salem are Firoz Khan, Mohammed Tahir Merchant alias Tahir Taklya, Karimullah Khan and Riyaz Ahmed Siddique.

The special TADA court had completed hearing of argument on the quantum of the punishment to be awarded to the convicts on August 10. However, Dossa died of a heart attack on June 28.

Meanwhile, after the conviction, the prosecution had sought death penalty for three convicts - Feroz Khan, Taher Merchant and Karimullah Khan - as they were held guilty of criminal conspiracy as well as TADA charges. The CBI had sought maximum punishment for Salem, who is having the Portugal treaty in his favour, which restrains courts from granting more than 25-years punishment to him. The court said that it would decide on the plea on September 7. The court will announce its judgment against Siddiqui, who is accused in the murder of city builder Pradeep Jain, on August 31.

Siddiqui, who had turned an approver in the case, was declared hostile.
