Conway says Trump will make sure Congress pays for Mexico wall”

At a rally in Phoenix on Tuesday, Trump drew the line in the sand Bannon had urged.

Blowing up the GOP's attempts to hush Trump's government shutdown threats, Kellyanne Conway said Trump will not back down on the wall, even if he has apparently abandoned his campaign promises of making Mexico foot the bill.

Specifically, the president suggested that he might veto any spending bill that failed to include funds for his monument to American xenophobia, thereby allowing the government to shut down (and, nearly certainly, his approval rating and that of his party to fall).

The trade agreement was signed by former President Bill Clinton, the husband of Trump's political rival Hillary Clinton, who he beat in the November presidential election previous year. "Make no mistake: The President said he will purposefully hurt American communities to force American taxpayers to fund an immoral, ineffective and expensive border wall".

"I don't think a government shutdown is necessary, and I don't think most people want to see a government shutdown, ourselves included", the House speaker told reporters in Oregon Wednesday. Let me be very clear to Democrats in Congress who oppose a border wall and stand in the way of border security: "You are putting all of America's safety at risk".

Republican Representative Jim Jordan of OH, another influential voice within the group, repeated the same message. And without the filibuster, Republicans would become wholly responsible for any spending bill and debt-limit increase that passes - and for the consequences that would follow if they did not.

There is now no indication that funding for the wall would come from anywhere other than the USA government.

Democrats uniformally slammed Trump's remarks, with several calling the president's speech "unhinged" on Twitter. It also contains $1.6 billion for the construction of a physical wall along the southern border.

Mexico's Ministry of Foreign Affairs took the tweet in its stride, noting that it will continue "to be serious and constructive, always putting national interest ahead" and seeking a deal that is mutually agreeable to the three North American countries.
